A bit about my life.
I can start by telling you that I never enjoyed running. I was the type who never exercised, never played any form of sports... until I enlisted into the Army.
I remembered when I was 13, my 2.4km timing was once 16-17 mins and to my utmost chagrin, girls were running faster than me. It all changed when my dad told me that running was mind over matter, it's about not giving up. I listened to that advice. For the next 2.4km, I continued running onwards despite all the discomforts, cramps, and muscle aches. I managed to clock 12:30 which I felt satisfied. That was during my secondary two days. And proceeded to hit 11:10 when I was secondary four. That was like a four points out of five. How I did that still bamboozles me till this very day.
For roughly four years, I never ran again. (unless you are counting me chasing after buses) Okay fine, I did try running and was mocked by my other friends for going too slow.
Fast forward to the present, I am running 9:30. A timing that rivals the average Commandos, Guardsmen, and NSF Officers. A timing I once thought I would never achieve. A timing I am rather proud of, considering I don't exercise. Makes me wonder sometime how far I would be going if I had joined a vigorous and physically-taxing CCA. Of course, I am not stopping there. Dreams of breaking into the eight minutes range may soon become a reality.
In the end, I still dislike running - endurance training is bleah.
So, I shall end my post with some (obvious) pointers for running.
1) Never walk. If you do, it's over. You lost the battle against yourself.
2) Take in controlled breaths. Breath in, hold, and release. Slow your heartrate down.
3) Motivate yourself as you run. It's mental battle within yourself. You think fast runners don't feel tired ah?
4) Pick on someone you believe is shittier than you yet he/she doing better than you. As you continue running, start berating yourself. "Why the hell is that piece of shit running faster than me?" It gives you that spur, that raw emotional boost to push yourself onwards.
5) Enjoy running. (as if)
